Baltimore marathon relay [Oct. 12th, 2009|01:09 pm]

[Current Mood |cheerfulcheerful]

This weekend, the awesome livejournal's runners community's relay race has finally happened! For awhile, I wasn't sure this was going to happen, and even come race day, was surprised that so many people were all able to get together and actually do it. Yay us! :)

The race was the Baltimore Marathon, where runners could do a full marathon, a half, or do the full marathon in a relay team of four, where each person runs ~ 1/4 of the whole marathon course. The four 'legs' of the marathon differ not only by distance, but also by the difficulty of the terrain. Having chosen the shortest leg, I foolishly ended up choosing the leg with a huge hill, which I was not prepared for, but, hey, live and learn!

My teammates were frigging awesome. Seriously, seriously awesome. After my slow first leg, hbfs , jakshadows , andsupermanz ran their legs so fast that the team finished FIFTH (!) among the mixed-sex teams, out of ~ 400! How sweet is that?!

It was very nice to meet so many people and get a chance to do something this fun :)  Awesome, awesome race, and an awesome weekend!

Iceland: nature baths, reindeer, and Icelandic horses [Jun. 4th, 2009|04:45 pm]

Photos -- glaciers, nature baths, reindeer and Icelandic horsesCollapse )

Iceland: land of fire and ice [May. 27th, 2009|12:03 pm]

[Current Mood |cheerfulcheerful]

Land of Fire and Ice.

To be continued...

Истинная правда что  Исландия land of fire and ice.

Фотки и рассказы coming up :)

Crossing the Lincoln Tunnel -- 5K Race Report [Apr. 26th, 2009|04:48 pm]

[Current Mood |accomplished]

Today's the day when one has a rare opportunity to cross the Lincoln Tunnel by foot, if one registers for the Lincoln Tunnel 5K challenge run. For out-of-state folk, Lincoln Tunnel is one of the two tunnels here that connect New York with New Jersey,  it goes under the Hudson River. Usually, it is open to cars only, and is quite congested. Today, they closed off one of the tubes for runners, and let us have a go at it. Neat, huh? Supposed to be the only certified tunnel race in the country :)

As promised, the tunnel was clean, and the air, which is rotated every some-seconds, was nice and probably as clean as New York air ever gets. Today's crazy heat was not a factor in the tunnel; it was almost chilly and, overall, quite comfortable.

The runners start at New Jersey, run the tunnel into New York, turn around and run back to New Jersey, so basically you run the tunnel twice. Running through the tunnel with a whole bunch of people behind you has a feel of some kind of an urban zombie movie.

V. and I ran this one together, so we didn't go particularly fast. I even got a chance to take some pictures! Of course, the quality is exactly what one'd expect from a tiny cheap camera, in a tunnel, taken by a running person :)) Of course, the quality is exactly what you'd expect from a tiny cheap camera, in a tunnel, taken by a person who's running :) Collapse )

The first race of the season did not disappoint. 53:49 finish -- yaaaay!!! -- is more than I was hoping for on the hilly Central Park's course, and the age group place within the top 28% of the racers feels fantastic.

V. came to the race to cheer on me, which was super-sweet of him. Seeing

futurebird cheering was great, too.

The next race is in a month. It is in my own neighborhood, and is, thanks God, completely flat :)))

I just signed up for an Olympic-distance triathlon. That is, 1500m open-water swim, followed by a 40km bike ride, followed by a 10K run. Am both excited and scared. Mostly excited :))

The triathlon is September 27th, the training program starts at the end of May.

Yippie!? :)

Motivation is a remarkable thing. If I had a chance to start my career all over, that's what I'd study: motivation, particularly in athletics. Seriously.

[Current Mood |in pain]

Went to my first running class (with New York Road Runners) last night. Am in so much pain today. It would have been bad even if I all I did yesterday was that class, but I also had a kick-ass swimming session around lunchtime, too. Ouch. My legs. My back. My shoulders. My arms.

That's what classes do to you. Some psychological trick, where coaching gets much more out of you than you can ever get by yourself.

Oh, and as the running class was jogging back to where we started from, I overheard someone say "A guy actually died during a class once... No-no, just that one time !!!"

Now have a week to get myself together before the next class....
